2022 Valentine’s Day Luncheon

An Opportunity for Grieving Family Members to Support One Another

Valentine’s Day can be a bittersweet and lonely time if your spouse has passed away. To help support these members of our community, our team at Coleman Funeral Home in Oxford hosted a Valentine’s Luncheon to give widows and widowers a place to converse and connect with those that have similar experiences.

“In the first days after someone has died, we know how to respond to a family’s grief,” said Kathy Brummett, family care coordinator at Coleman Funeral Home. “We send condolences, we order flowers, we make them a meal. We try to continue to do these things beyond those first few days. This luncheon is one way we can help to extend that comfort and care.”

Judy Cooper, a long-time resident of Oxford, has been attending the luncheon for years. Her husband, Charlie, passed away several years ago, but she sees the event as a way to foster community — a sentiment that was always important to her and her husband as they built a life on their 40-acre farm just outside the city.

“I like to invite other people to do things that I’m going to do because it helps,” said Cooper. “I reach out to friends that are more recent widows than I am. It’s an opportunity to feel supported again and to be able to pass that on to others.”

Cooper adds that the luncheon is an opportunity to learn from those who have similar stories.

We realize that I’m not the only one that’s gone through this and made it,” she said. “Through fellowship and God’s help, I know I can make it too.”

We are thankful for the opportunity to help people in our community through difficult times. If you are interested in attending our Valentine’s Day luncheon next year or any of our other events, call us at (662) 234-3900 or come by our office at 601 Commerce Parkway Oxford, MS 38655.
